Origin: First settled in 1639, this town was a part of Hampton known as North Hill Parish. Residents began petitioning for a separate parish as early as 1719. North Hill Parish was set off from Hampton in 1738, with the responsibility of supporting a clergyman and schoolmaster of their own. Full township privileges were not granted until 1742, following the establishment of the New Hampshire-Massachusetts border. North Hampton was the birthplace of General Henry Dearborn, commander-in-chief of the American forces in the War of 1812, for whom Fort Dearborn (now Chicago) and Dearborn, Michigan, were named.

Population Trends: Population change for North Hampton totaled 1,280 over 50 years, from 3,259 in 1970 to 4,539 in 2020. The largest decennial percent change was a 18 percent increase from 1990 to 2000. The town's population increased by six percent from 2010 to 2020.
 
Population Density and Land Area: 2023 (US Census Bureau): 326.3 persons per square mile of land area. North Hampton contains 13.9 square miles of land area and 0 square miles of inland water area.
