Origin:
This township started as a portion of Kingston called Kingston East Parish. Residents of the parish petitioned Governor Jonathan Belcher of Massachusetts for a separate charter, because its location was ""too distant from the Kingston school and place of worship"" and they wished to establish their own. Their petition was granted in 1738. Sandown and Danville were also separated from the original Kingston settlement. The location of the boundary line between Kingston and East Kingston was under dispute for a long time thereafter.
