Origin: Most of this territory was originally part of a 1775 grant to Jonas Minot, Matthew Thornton, and others that became New London. The town was formed from part of New London and Kearsarge Gore, and incorporated in 1807. The name Wilmot was in honor of Dr. James Wilmot, a scholar and clergyman, and rector at Barton-on-Heath in Warwickshire, England. Though he never came to America, Dr. Wilmot had joined with William Pitt, the Marquis of Rockingham, and others in protesting the treatment of the American colonies by the British crown.

Population Trends: Population change for Wilmot totaled 909 over 50 years, from 516 in 1970 to 1,425 in 2020. The largest decennial percent change was a 41 percent increase from 1970 to 1980. The town's population increased by five percent from 2010 to 2020.
 
Population Density and Land Area: 2023 (US Census Bureau): 49.9 persons per square mile of land area. Wilmot contains 29.4 square miles of land area and 0.2 square miles of inland water area.
