Origin: Dummer was named for Governor William Dummer of Massachusetts, whose achievements included a peace treaty with the Indians that lasted nearly twenty years. Also named for Governor Dummer was Fort Dummer, one of the earliest Indian forts in New England, situated near what is now Brattleboro, Vermont; Governor Dummer Academy in Massachusetts, one the earliest private academies in New England; and the town of Dummerston, Vermont. Although first granted in 1773, Dummer was not incorporated until 1848.

Population Trends: Population change for Dummer totaled 73 over 50 years, from 225 in 1970 to 298 in 2020. The largest decennial percent change was a 73 percent increase from 1970 to 1980; percent change has been negative since then. The town's population declined by two percent from 2010 to 2020.
 
Population Density and Land Area: 2023 (US Census Bureau): 6.5 persons per square mile of land area. Dummer contains 48 square miles of land area and 1.3 square miles of inland water area.
